REMOVING BARRIERS TO EDUCATION
At LifeSpring, we are passionate about supporting children to get the most out of their education by being present in the classroom for as much as possible. In addition to our on-site water tanks, we are in the very early stages of developing a project which aims to provide reusable sanitary pads to schoolgirls in the Bukedea District. This is following discussion with our Ugandan community stakeholders who have identified this need,
In Uganda, menstruation is a profound barrier to education for adolescent girls, with many missing several days of school each month. Sanitary products are expensive, forcing many girls to rely on unsafe, improvised materials like old rags or paper, which are uncomfortable and ineffective. Without access to affordable pads, girls fear leaks and public embarrassment.
Deeply entrenched social stigmas and cultural taboos around menstruation mean that girls frequently face bullying and ridicule from peers, fostering anxiety that discourages school attendance. This causes girls to fall behind in their studies and increases their risk of eventually dropping out.
Our vision is to collaborate with our communities in Bukedea, to provide them with the skills and materials to make and distribute reusable sanitary pads to schoolgirls in the area, ensuring that they can continue attending school and achieve their educational potential. This project is in its very early stages, so watch this space!
